Harald zur Hausen (deceased 2023) shared the 2008 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering that HPV causes cervical cancer, identifying HPV-16 and HPV-18 in cervical tumors. His decades of work against initial skepticism established HPV as the primary etiology of cervical cancer. His discoveries enabled HPV vaccination that is now preventing cervical cancers globally.
