Harald zur Hausen received the 2008 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering that human papillomavirus causes cervical cancer. His work directly led to the development of HPV vaccines that are preventing cervical and other HPV-related cancers globally. His discovery represents one of the most successful cancer prevention strategies ever achieved.
