Rolf Zinkernagel shared the 1996 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Peter Doherty for the discovery of MHC restriction of cytotoxic T cell recognition. Their work showed that T cells recognize antigen only in the context of self MHC molecules. This finding underpins modern concepts of antigen presentation and cellular immunity central to cancer immunotherapy.
