Yousuf Zafar at Duke coined the term 'financial toxicity' and has been the leading researcher on the financial burden of cancer treatment — including high out-of-pocket costs, medical debt, insurance challenges, and the impact of financial stress on treatment adherence, quality of life, and even survival outcomes. His work on quantifying financial toxicity (COST measure) and on interventions to reduce financial burden has been important for addressing this often-overlooked dimension of cancer care.
