Younan Xia is the Brock Family Chair Professor at Georgia Institute of Technology in the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry and the Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering. He is one of the most highly cited chemists and materials scientists in the world, with over 85,000 total citations. Xia is a pioneer in the synthesis of noble metal nanostructures with controlled shapes and sizes — including nanocubes, nanowires, nanocages, and nanoplates. His gold and silver nanocages have unique hollow, porous structures that can be loaded with drugs and have tunable near-infrared plasmonic properties for photothermal and photoacoustic cancer imaging and therapy. He has made foundational contributions to cancer nanomedicine, developing nanoparticle platforms for drug delivery, tumor imaging, and photothermal therapy that have been extensively validated in animal cancer models.
