Xuejun Jiang has made fundamental contributions to understanding the molecular mechanisms and signaling pathways that regulate ferroptosis in cancer cells. His laboratory characterized the role of mitochondria in ferroptosis through their contribution to lipid peroxide generation and iron metabolism. He identified key upstream regulators of GPX4 and the ferroptosis pathway including p53, NRF2, and mevalonate pathway components that can be pharmacologically targeted. His research has revealed that cancer cells with mesenchymal, drug-resistant phenotypes show heightened GPX4 dependency and ferroptosis vulnerability.
