William Pao has made fundamental contributions to understanding acquired resistance to EGFR inhibitors in lung cancer, characterizing the T790M resistance mutation and developing strategies to overcome it. His work bridging clinical observation to molecular mechanism has defined the drug resistance field in oncology. He subsequently moved to Roche/Genentech to translate these discoveries into new therapeutics.
