William Coolidge invented the hot cathode X-ray tube in 1913, which became the foundation for modern diagnostic and therapeutic radiology. The Coolidge tube enabled the generation of stable, high-energy X-rays with controllable output, making reliable external beam cancer radiation therapy possible. This invention is universally recognized as one of the most consequential technical advances enabling the development of radiation oncology as a therapeutic discipline.
