Wei Bhatt investigates the paradox of chromosomal instability in cancer evolution and metastasis: while CIN generates diversity that drives metastasis, the same CIN also activates anti-tumor immunity that should suppress cancer progression. His research has characterized the context-dependent fitness consequences of CIN, showing that stromal signals and immunosuppressive microenvironments determine whether CIN is a tumor promoter or suppressor. He demonstrated that in immunosuppressed contexts, CIN-driven diversity accelerates metastatic clone selection. His work informs prognostic use of CIN measurements in clinical oncology.
