James Watson co-discovered the DNA double helix with Francis Crick in 1953 and shared the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. He led Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory for decades and was the first director of the Human Genome Project. His work transformed biomedical research including cancer biology.
