Mark Walters has pioneered allogeneic hematopoietic cell therapy for sickle cell disease and other hemoglobinopathies at UCSF, developing reduced-intensity conditioning regimens that enable safe allogeneic transplantation with lower toxicity. His research on haploidentical transplantation for non-malignant hematologic diseases has expanded access to curative cell therapy for underserved populations. He is investigating the intersection of gene therapy and allogeneic approaches for hemoglobin disorders.
