Thomas Waldmann characterized the interleukin 2 receptor alpha chain and made landmark contributions to IL-15 biology, including its role in memory CD8 T cell and NK cell homeostasis. He advanced IL-15 and IL-15 superagonists toward clinical translation in cancer. He is a historical founder of cytokine based immunotherapy.
