Volker Schirrmacher at DKFZ contributed to research on Newcastle disease virus (NDV) as an oncolytic agent and cancer immunotherapy tool. His work on the anti-tumor immune mechanisms activated by NDV-infected cancer cell vaccines and on the systemic anti-tumor effects generated by local NDV treatment contributed to early oncolytic virology and viral cancer vaccination concepts.
