Vincent DeVita is an icon of oncology who created MOPP (mechlorethamine, Oncovin, procarbazine, prednisone) combination chemotherapy for Hodgkin lymphoma at the NCI in the 1960s, establishing for the first time that a disseminated cancer could be cured with chemotherapy. As NCI director and later at Yale, he championed the development of the field of oncology, authored the definitive textbook 'DeVita, Hellman, and Rosenberg's Cancer,' and has received virtually every major award in medicine.
