Victor Despeignes is credited with performing the first recorded application of X-rays for cancer treatment in July 1896, just months after Roentgen's discovery of X-rays. He treated a patient with gastric cancer with multiple radiation exposures and documented partial symptomatic relief. While the treatment was not curative, this marks the founding moment of radiation oncology as a therapeutic discipline.
