Harold Varmus shared the 1989 Nobel Prize with J Michael Bishop for discovering that retroviral oncogenes have cellular counterparts (proto-oncogenes), transforming cancer genetics. He has served as director of NIH and NCI and is a leading figure in US cancer science policy. His work established the cellular origin of cancer-causing genes.
