Valter Longo at USC has contributed to research on fasting and caloric restriction as strategies to sensitize cancer cells to chemotherapy while protecting normal tissues — the differential stress resistance/sensitization hypothesis. His clinical trials on fasting-mimicking diet in combination with chemotherapy and his foundational research on nutrient sensing pathways in cancer metabolism have contributed to the emerging field of metabolic approaches to cancer sensitization.
