Umberto Veronesi conducted the Milan trial (with Bernard Fisher's NSABP B-06) demonstrating that breast-conserving surgery (quadrantectomy/lumpectomy) plus radiotherapy was equivalent to mastectomy for early breast cancer — transforming surgical management and preserving quality of life for millions of women. He also developed sentinel lymph node biopsy for breast cancer, eliminating the need for full axillary dissection in sentinel-node-negative patients.
