Umberto Veronesi was the Italian surgical oncologist who independently pioneered breast-conserving surgery through his quadrantectomy studies, simultaneously with Bernard Fisher in the United States. He founded the European Institute of Oncology in Milan and conducted landmark trials demonstrating that conservative surgery preserved survival while improving quality of life. He was also an early proponent of sentinel lymph node biopsy in breast cancer.
