Giorgio Trinchieri

Giorgio Trinchieri demonstrated that the gut microbiome is essential for the efficacy of both chemotherapy and immunotherapy by priming innate immune cells through pattern recognition receptor stimulation. His work showed that commensal bacteria and their products, particularly CpG-containing DNA, activate tumor-associated myeloid cells to produce TNF-alpha necessary for platinum chemotherapy efficacy. His research on microbiome-myeloid cell interactions has revealed the mechanistic basis for how gut bacteria influence systemic anti-tumor immunity.
