Susumu Tonegawa received the 1987 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery of the genetic principle for generating antibody diversity through V(D)J recombination. His work showed how a limited genome encodes the vast repertoire of antibodies. This foundational discovery underlies all of adaptive immunity and modern therapeutic antibody engineering.
