Ting Wang has transformed understanding of how transposable elements are regulated by epigenetic mechanisms and how their derepression shapes cancer genomes. His comprehensive mapping of TE expression across cancers revealed tissue-specific and cancer-type-specific patterns of TE reactivation. He has demonstrated that TEs serve as regulatory elements co-opted by cancer cells to activate oncogene expression programs.
