E Donnall Thomas (deceased 2012) received the 1990 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for developing allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. He performed the first successful sibling-matched BMT and founded the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center transplant program. His work created the field of hematopoietic cell transplantation.
