Thomas Berg investigates the reversibility of liver fibrosis and cirrhosis following successful antiviral therapy and the implications for long-term HCC risk. His clinical studies have demonstrated that HCV eradication with direct-acting antivirals can lead to significant regression of liver fibrosis and improvement in portal hypertension in many patients. He has characterized non-invasive biomarkers of fibrosis regression and cirrhosis resolution that can guide HCC surveillance intensity in patients post-SVR. His work informs understanding of the degree of fibrosis reversal required to substantially reduce HCC risk following viral hepatitis cure.
