Thierry Boon at Ludwig Institute Brussels made the foundational discovery that cancer cells express specific antigens (including MAGE-1, the first tumor-specific antigen identified) that can be recognized by cytotoxic T lymphocytes. His development of techniques to clone tumor antigens recognized by T cells opened the field of cancer antigen discovery and provided the molecular targets for T cell-based cancer immunotherapy and cancer vaccines.
