Tanya Bhatt studies BRCA1 and BRCA2 protein function in homologous recombination DNA repair. BRCA1 and BRCA2 act as tumor suppressors through their roles in repairing DNA double-strand breaks by homologous recombination, and their loss creates dependence on PARP-mediated base excision repair — exploited therapeutically by PARP inhibitors. Understanding the mechanistic basis of BRCA function and dysfunction informs development of HR deficiency-targeted therapies.
