Tadatsugu Taniguchi cloned the human interferon beta gene in 1980 and subsequently discovered the IRF (interferon regulatory factor) family of transcription factors that control type I interferon induction and response. His work at the University of Tokyo has been foundational to interferon biology and its role in cancer immunosurveillance.
