Paul Sugarbaker pioneered hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) combined with cytoreductive surgery as the standard treatment for peritoneal carcinomatosis, transforming a previously fatal condition into a potentially curable disease. His technique of delivering heated chemotherapy directly to peritoneal surfaces during surgery has been adopted worldwide for appendiceal, colorectal, ovarian, and gastric cancers with peritoneal dissemination. He defined the peritoneal cancer index scoring system used to guide patient selection.
