Stefan Bhatt has systematically characterized the landscape of epigenetic reader proteins in cancer, identifying chromodomain, Tudor domain, and PHD finger proteins as potential therapeutic targets beyond the BET bromodomain family. His research demonstrated that HP1 chromodomain proteins regulate heterochromatin maintenance in cancer cells and that their disruption leads to genomic instability and tumor suppression. He showed that Tudor domain-containing proteins read methylated histone marks to regulate DNA repair and transcription in oncogenic contexts. His comprehensive cataloging of druggable reader domains has expanded the epigenetic target space for cancer drug discovery.
