Silvia Formenti has been the foremost investigator of the abscopal effect of radiotherapy and its immunological basis. She and Sandra Demaria established the conceptual and experimental framework demonstrating that localized radiation can convert tumors into in situ vaccines when combined with immune adjuvants. Her clinical work has pioneered combination trials of SBRT with CTLA-4 and PD-1 blockade.
