Shimon Sakaguchi discovered regulatory T cells in 1995 and later co-defined FOXP3 as their master transcription factor. His work transformed understanding of immune tolerance and opened Treg biology as a therapeutic target in cancer and autoimmunity. He directs the Immunology Frontier Research Center at Osaka.
