Akiko Shimamura directs one of the premier bone marrow failure programs in the world, advancing genomic diagnosis and management of inherited bone marrow failure syndromes including Fanconi anemia and Diamond-Blackfan anemia. Her research on ribosome biology disorders has revealed fundamental connections between ribosome biogenesis, p53 activation, and cancer predisposition. She leads clinical programs that integrate genomic diagnosis with cancer surveillance and stem cell transplantation for affected families.
