Setsuko K. Chambers
M.D.
Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology; Gynecologic Oncologist
👥Biography 个人简介
Setsuko Chambers is a gynecologic oncologist and Professor at Creighton University School of Medicine with a distinguished career spanning academic medicine, clinical trials, and translational biology. She has been a long-standing member and investigator of the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG), contributing to numerous cooperative group trials in endometrial and ovarian cancer. Her basic and translational research has focused on the role of macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF) signaling in gynecologic cancer progression, particularly in ovarian and endometrial carcinomas. Chambers identified and characterized the tumor-promoting role of M-CSF and its receptor (CSF1R/c-fms) in ovarian cancer, demonstrating that M-CSF signaling promotes tumor cell invasion, survival, and immune evasion through macrophage recruitment and polarization. This work contributed to the growing understanding of tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) in the ovarian cancer microenvironment and provided the biological rationale for CSF1R-targeting therapeutic strategies being pursued clinically. Prior to her role at Creighton, Chambers held academic appointments at the University of Arizona Cancer Center, where she also conducted research on psychological distress, quality of life, and behavioral interventions for women with gynecologic cancers. This integrative approach to cancer care — combining molecular biology with patient-centered outcomes — distinguishes her career as a physician-scientist committed to the whole patient.
🧪Research Fields 研究领域
🎓Key Contributions 主要贡献
M-CSF/CSF1R Signaling in Ovarian Cancer
Identified and characterized the oncogenic role of macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF) and its receptor CSF1R in ovarian cancer progression, invasion, and immune evasion, providing the biological foundation for CSF1R-targeted therapy.
Tumor-Associated Macrophage Biology
Demonstrated that M-CSF recruits and polarizes tumor-associated macrophages to promote a pro-tumorigenic microenvironment in ovarian cancer, contributing mechanistic insights relevant to immune modulation strategies.
GOG Cooperative Trials in Endometrial Cancer
Participated in multiple Gynecologic Oncology Group trials evaluating chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, and targeted agents in endometrial cancer, contributing to evidence-based standards of care for this malignancy.
Psycho-oncology and Quality of Life in Gynecologic Cancer
Conducted research on psychological distress and quality-of-life outcomes in women with gynecologic malignancies, and evaluated supportive care and behavioral interventions to address unmet psychosocial needs in this population.
Representative Works 代表性著作
Macrophage colony-stimulating factor mediates invasion of ovarian cancer cells through urokinase
Cancer Research (1997)
Demonstrated that M-CSF promotes invasive behavior in ovarian cancer cells through upregulation of urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA), identifying a mechanistic link between M-CSF signaling and extracellular matrix degradation.
The role of M-CSF and CSF1R in ovarian cancer
Gynecologic Oncology (2002)
Reviewed the evidence for M-CSF and its receptor as drivers of ovarian cancer progression and immune evasion, and outlined the therapeutic rationale for targeting this axis in clinical development.
Psychological distress in women with gynecologic cancer: a longitudinal study
Gynecologic Oncology (1992)
Reported longitudinal findings on psychological distress in women with ovarian and other gynecologic cancers, identifying predictors of distress and informing supportive care program development.
