Mark Selman pioneered intraoperative photodynamic therapy for brain tumors, developing clinical protocols for PDT-assisted surgical resection of glioblastoma that have demonstrated improved local control and extended survival in clinical trials. His work with Photofrin and second-generation photosensitizers has established the safety and feasibility of PDT in the unique constraints of neurosurgical applications. He has trained a generation of neurosurgeons in PDT-enhanced tumor resection techniques.
