Sarah Bhatt focuses on TGF-beta as a master regulator of CAF activation, desmoplasia, and fibrotic tumor stroma that suppresses immune responses and promotes cancer progression. Her laboratory has elucidated how cancer cell-derived TGF-beta signals to fibroblasts to induce myofibroblast differentiation and matrix deposition. She demonstrated that TGF-beta pathway blockade combined with checkpoint immunotherapy can overcome stromal immune exclusion in multiple solid tumors. Her work has informed clinical development of bifunctional TGF-beta/PD-L1 inhibitors.
