Ryan Bhatt studies visceral adipose tissue as a distinct risk factor for cancer development and adverse outcomes, separate from total body weight or BMI. His research demonstrated that CT-measured visceral fat area is a stronger predictor of cancer risk, surgical complications, and treatment outcomes than BMI across multiple cancer types. He characterized the pro-inflammatory, insulin-resistant biology of visceral fat compared to subcutaneous adipose tissue that may explain its stronger cancer association. His work is advancing body composition assessment by CT as a clinical tool for cancer risk stratification and pre-operative optimization.
