Francis Peyton Rous (deceased 1970) discovered in 1911 that a cell-free filtrate from a chicken sarcoma could transmit the tumor, establishing the concept of tumor-causing viruses. He received the Nobel Prize in 1966 more than 50 years after the discovery. Rous sarcoma virus became the foundation for discovery of the first oncogene, src.
