Roel Verhaak has contributed to cancer transcriptomics and genomics, including work on glioblastoma molecular subtypes and the landmark discovery that amplified oncogenes (EGFR, CDK8) in cancer frequently exist on extrachromosomal DNA (ecDNA) rather than within chromosomes — allowing higher copy numbers and faster evolution. This ecDNA discovery has important implications for understanding oncogene amplification and drug resistance.
