Roel Nusse co-discovered the WNT1 proto-oncogene and has spent decades elucidating the WNT signaling pathway. His work established the molecular framework for understanding how WNT signals regulate cell proliferation and stem cell maintenance. He has demonstrated that aberrant WNT signaling drives numerous cancers including colorectal, breast, and liver cancers. His laboratory continues to develop therapeutic strategies targeting the WNT pathway.
