Robert Weinberg at MIT/Whitehead made foundational discoveries in cancer biology: identifying the first human oncogene (mutant RAS from a bladder cancer cell line) and the first tumor suppressor gene (RB retinoblastoma). He co-authored the landmark 'Hallmarks of Cancer' papers with Doug Hanahan that defined the conceptual framework for understanding cancer biology. His work on cancer stem cells and EMT has continued to shape cancer research.
