Robert Langer is among the most influential biomedical engineers in history, having founded the field of controlled drug release from polymer matrices. His research on PLGA and other biodegradable polymer nanoparticles has underpinned dozens of cancer drug delivery platforms. He co-founded more than 40 biotechnology companies, including those developing nanoparticle cancer drug delivery systems, and has contributed to the scientific foundation for lipid nanoparticle mRNA vaccines.
