Reuben Shaw at the Salk Institute has made major contributions to understanding LKB1 (STK11) as a metabolic tumor suppressor and master kinase that activates AMPK under energy stress to inhibit mTORC1. His work on LKB1 loss in NSCLC and other cancers, on the downstream signaling mechanisms, and on vulnerabilities created by LKB1 loss (including sensitivity to metabolic stress and certain drug combinations) has been highly influential for understanding lung cancer biology.
