Ravid Straussman at the Weizmann Institute made the landmark discovery that intratumoral bacteria within pancreatic cancer cells metabolize gemcitabine into an inactive form, directly mediating chemotherapy resistance. This finding opened a new paradigm of intra-tumoral microbiome biology in cancer. His subsequent work has characterized the tumor microbiome across cancer types and its functional impact on treatment response.
