Peter Ratcliffe shared the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for elucidating oxygen-dependent prolyl hydroxylation of HIF-alpha subunits. His work established the molecular basis of cellular oxygen sensing and catalyzed drug discovery for HIF-targeted therapies. He continues to advance hypoxia biology at the Crick Institute.
