Raghu Kalluri

Raghu Kalluri is a world-leading expert on cancer-associated fibroblasts and the cancer stroma. His laboratory discovered that CAFs consist of heterogeneous subpopulations with distinct pro- and anti-tumorigenic functions, challenging the view that all CAFs promote cancer progression. He has characterized how CAF-derived exosomes transmit signals to cancer cells, and has developed genetic tools to ablate specific CAF populations in vivo. His work has uncovered why targeting CAFs requires subtype-specific strategies and has provided a roadmap for more precise anti-stromal therapies.
