Rafi Ahmed at Emory University made foundational contributions to understanding T cell exhaustion — a state of dysfunction that T cells enter during chronic infection and in the tumor microenvironment. His work characterizing exhausted T cell transcriptional programs (including the role of TOX and other transcription factors) and his research on how checkpoint blockade reinvigorates but does not fully reverse exhaustion has shaped understanding of immunotherapy response and resistance. His memory T cell research has also influenced vaccine and immunotherapy design.
