Rafi Ahmed

Rafi Ahmed at Emory is a pioneer in T cell biology who established the concept of T cell exhaustion — a dysfunctional state of chronic antigen stimulation first described in chronic viral infection but central to tumor immunology. His discovery of TOX as a master transcription factor of T cell exhaustion, and his characterization of the molecular programs distinguishing exhausted from memory T cells, has been fundamental for understanding why tumors evade T cell immunity and how checkpoint blockade can partially restore T cell function.
