R. Lee Clark

R. Lee Clark served as the founding and transformative president of MD Anderson Cancer Center from 1946 to 1978, growing it from a small tumor clinic into one of the world's premier cancer centers. His vision established MD Anderson as an institution dedicated exclusively to cancer care, research, and education, a model that distinguished it from general academic medical centers and contributed to its focus and excellence. He developed the integrated multidisciplinary cancer care model at MD Anderson, bringing together surgeons, radiation oncologists, and medical oncologists to collaborate on complex cancer cases long before multidisciplinary care became standard elsewhere. His leadership built the institutional culture of research-driven cancer care that has remained central to MD Anderson's identity and mission as the largest cancer center in the United States by patient volume.
