Prescott Deininger has been a leader in understanding Alu/SINE elements and their impact on genome stability in cancer. His work demonstrated that Alu element recombination drives large-scale genomic rearrangements in cancer, including deletions of tumor suppressor genes. He has shown that Alu transcription is derepressed in cancer and contributes to innate immune activation through dsRNA formation.
