Pierre Denoix developed the TNM (Tumor-Node-Metastasis) staging system in the 1940s-50s at Gustave Roussy — the universal language of cancer staging used worldwide. TNM classifies tumors by primary tumor size/invasion (T), lymph node involvement (N), and distant metastasis (M), enabling standardized communication about cancer extent, prognosis prediction, and treatment selection. The TNM system is maintained by UICC and AJCC and remains foundational for all cancer clinical research and treatment.
